What’s Love, Honesty & Freedom Have To Do With Organizing?

It’s February. We are about 1/6 of the way through the year. How are you doing with your goals to become better organized?
If you’re struggling, I recommend using the February holidays to give you a boost. The February holidays? Yes! February has three big events of note – Valentine’s Day, Washington’s Birthday, and Lincoln’s Birthday. Each occasion can be summarized by one word: Valentine’s Day = Love; Washington’s Birthday = Honesty (remember the childhood story about George chopping down the cherry tree?) and Lincoln’s Birthday = Freedom (Emancipation Proclamation/Slavery). washington-lincoln
Here’s how to use these holidays to pare down and de-clutter so your home becomes more organized.
Love – When picking up an item, ask yourself, “Do I love it? Do I need it? Do I use it?” If it’s not an item you are using on a regular basis, you don’t have a need for it. The only other reason to keep the item is because you truly love it. If it evokes joy or happiness every time you look at it and/or it brings back good memories, keep it. If it doesn’t, out it goes.
Honesty – Be brutally honest with yourself. When is the last time you even thought about the item in question? If you hadn’t just unearthed it from a pile, would you even remember you had it? If you didn’t have it, would you miss it and would you actively seek it out? If you saw it in a store, would you buy it today? Unless each of these answers is a resounding “yes,” let it go.
Freedom – Getting rid of the burden of unnecessary stuff gives you tremendous freedom: the freedom of space (not storing things you don’t like or use), the freedom of time (less to clean or to move), and the freedom of money (no need to pay to insure things you don’t own, no need to pay for their upkeep).
So this February, let our Founding Fathers and Cupid be your organizing guides!
